Paul Kramer, former oboe teacher at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and founder of the Woodwind Arts Quintet there, died in Boynton Beach, Fla., Jan. 14 of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 86.
He was a native of Cleveland who began playing oboe when he was 12. He played in a U.S. Army band during World War II, then after the war studied at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he met Toba Schwartz. They married in 1948.
He played with many orchestras and earned a master’s degree from Boston University before he joined the UW-Milwaukee faculty in 1966 and retired in 1997.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Judith (Jerrold) Koret, Miriam (Jakub) Lepold, and Jane Kramer (Kim Murphy); brother Arthur Kramer; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
