Author, filmmaker, psychiatrist to present, discuss documentary

Chicago jazz critic and author Howard Reich wondered why his Holocaust survivor mother began reliving her childhood experiences decades later. It turned out she was suffering from late onset post-traumatic stress disorder.

In his struggle to understand his mother’s condition and biography, Reich first wrote a book, “The First and Final Nightmare of Sonia Reich,” and then collaborated in a documentary film by Gordon Quinn, “Prisoner of Her Past.”

The film, released in 2010, will have its Milwaukee premier on Thursday, March 10, 7 p.m. at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union Theater, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.

This event is being hosted by the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center, UWM’s Sam & Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies, UWM Foreign Languages and Literature Department, and Hillel Milwaukee.

Reich and Quinn will be members of a panel, along with Milwaukee psychiatrist Dr. Herzl Spiro. The panelists will discuss the film and answer questions from the audience.

The public is invited, and admission is free. For more information, contact Bonnie Shafrin at HERC, 414-963-2719 or bonnies@milwaukeejewish.org

The Holocaust Education Resource Center is a program of the Coalition for Jewish Learning, the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
