Elaine Melnik Bongar

Former Madisonian Elaine Melnik Bongar died Oct. 24 in Reseda, Calif., of complications of kidney disease. She was 82.

Born and raised in Madison, she graduated from West High School and attended the University of Miami. In Madison, she was an active member of the Beth Israel Center, where she was vice president of the sisterhood. She also was a member of Hadassh and B’nai B’rith, and volunteered for other organizations.

She and her husband, Larry Bongar, moved to Los Angeles in 1970. He died in 2001.

She is survived by daughters Debbie (Steven) Rosenthal of Ma’alot, Israel, and Hallie Bongar (Jim) White of Tucson, Ariz.; sons, Bruce Bongar of Palo Alto, Calif., and Andrew (Kim) Bongar of Calabasas, Calif.; sisters Beverly Saltoun Bernstein of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Corlie Melnik (Sol) Blumenfeld of Madison; and ten grandchildren.

Funeral services and burial were in Tucson on Oct. 26.

The family would appreciate memorial contributions to Temple Beth El in Madison and the Jewish Federation of Madison.
