HERC offers Shoah class, travel program

The Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center has opened registration for the second semester of its Holocaust Study Institute.

The six-session exploration of the historical, sociological, theological, and philosophical aspects of the Holocaust will focus on the implementation of the Holocaust and places where it occurred.

The first class is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 25, 7 p.m., at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd. The registration fee for the semester of study is $100.

A 14-day “Trip to the Places of the Holocaust” will follow the course on June 27-July 11. This tour of Poland, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic will allow participants to see sites significant to the Holocaust and to experience contemporary memorials in Eastern Europe.

The $4,999 cost includes all travel, lodging, entry fees to sites, and many meals. A deposit of $500 will reserve a place. Persons interested in the trip are not required to take the Holocaust Study Institute course.

The course and trip are coordinated and led by Amy H. Shapiro, Ph.D., professor of philosophy and humanities at Alverno College. The second semester faculty will also include local Holocaust scholars Rachel N. Baum, Ph.D., and Ruth Schwertfeger, Ph.D.
