Film classes set for January, February

The Coalition for Jewish Learning will present free classes in January and February about films of interest to the Jewish community.

The continuing “Cutting Edge Israel” series is co-sponsored by CJL, the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, and the Israel Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. These contemporary short films, offered on Thursday nights, 7-8:30 p.m., include:

Jan. 20, “The Woman from Sarajevo” (2007) — The true story of Zineba Hardaga, the first Muslim woman to be named “Righteous Among the Nations” at Yad Vashem. Hardaga hid a Jewish family during the Holocaust, and the Jewish family helped her family years later in Sarajevo. In English and Hebrew with subtitles. Instructors:  Paz Goldschmidt and Shirah Ozeri.

Feb. 3, “Rabbi Firer:  A Reason to Question” (2008) — The story of an Orthodox rabbi in Israel to whom more than 150 people a day turn for medical advice. Instructor:  Paz Goldschmidt.

The “Jews Around the World” series is co-sponsored by CJL and the JCC. The next film in this Sunday afternoon (4 p.m.) series is:

Jan. 23, “The Wedding Song” (2008) — Two girlfriends, a Jew and a Muslim, both prepare to enter arranged marriages in Tunisia during World War II. Their relationship is shaken when the Muslim girl’s fiancée aligns with the Nazis. In Arabic and French with subtitles. Suitable for ages 18 and up. Instructor: Laurie Herman.

All films are shown at the JCC, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd., and all are free of charge. Both series will continue through spring 2011.
