Jonas Gutman of Glendale died July 5 of natural causes. He was 89.
He was born in Radom, Poland. During the Holocaust, he survived five different camps. After liberation, he recuperated in Austria for a year. He met his wife, Lutka (nee Zollman), also a survivor, in a displaced persons camp in Stuttgart. They married in 1948, and came to Milwaukee in 1949. She died in 1994.
In Milwaukee, he made livings at a variety of occupations, from factory work to owning a grocery store, to shoe, insurance, and liquor sales. He was a member of Congregation Beth Jehudah.
According to his family, Judaism and Israel were important to him. “Through all his life challenges, he maintained his faith,” they wrote. According to his daughter Fran (Mark) Goldner of Mequon, he took one trip to Israel. He did not join organizations, but “supported organizations as best he could,” she said.
He also is survived by daughter Raizel (Gedalya) Schectman of Milwaukee; brother Eugene (Irene) Gutman of Glendale; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The Jewish Community Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Rabbi Benzion Twerski officiated at the funeral on July 6. Burial was in Agudas Achim Cemetery.
The family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Jewish charity of your choice.
