Wonderful community collaboration

There is a text in Pirkei Avot (4:2) that teaches, “One Mitzvah can lead to another Mitzvah.” On Sunday, March 21, this text came to life as the Milwaukee Jewish community came together for the Wisconsin Children’s Passover Project (page 1 photo, April).

Once again this year, through combined efforts we distributed approximately 700 packages of Passover Seder food to those in our community who are in need.

What is remarkable about this project is not only the amount of food that was donated, but also that it was collected and purchased through combined efforts of the Milwaukee Jewish community. Synagogues, agencies, schools and generous individuals crossing all denominations of Jews in Milwaukee gave of themselves to help feed others.

This project is also a wonderful example of community collaboration. The planning committee for this project consists of representatives from The Coalition for Jewish Learning, Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee, the Harry & Rose Samson JCC, the Jewish Community Food Pantry, the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis, Jewish Family Services and the Rabbi Scheinfeld Maos Chitim Fund. The Jewish Home and Care Center provided the space for the food distribution.

In addition to the generous donations, community collaboration and the mitzvah of feeding others, 90 teen and adult volunteers showed up early to pack and distribute the food and participate in learning.
