Sophie Koppel

Sophie Koppel (nee Kaufman) died Feb. 19, two weeks before her 103rd birthday.

The youngest of six children, she was born in Chicago. After graduating eighth grade, she entered the working world, first making gas mantles used for lighting and later at Sears Roebuck and Company and at L. Klein’s Department Store.

After marrying Eddie Koppel in 1926 and having the first child of their three children, the couple moved to Milwaukee. She was a full-time housewife and mother, her family said.

In 1972, the couple moved to Los Angeles.

“Sophie was known as the ‘beautiful girl from Chicago’ who joined the large Koppel family that first came to Milwaukee around 1890,” her family wrote in a funeral program.

“Sophie was known for her warmth, good humor, friendly smile and hospitality. Everyone who knew her liked her and wanted to be her friend.”

Her husband predeceased her in 1976. She is survived by daughter Annette Koppel of Los Angeles; sons Irving (Trish) Koppel of Durham, N.C., and Stuart Koppel of Los Angeles; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in Los Angeles.
