Second generation pharmacist Jack Langer died Nov. 21 of esophageal cancer at age 87.
Born in Milwaukee, Langer graduated from Washington High School in 1940 and the University of Wisconsin-Madison three years later with a degree in pharmacy.
After receiving his degree, Langer served during World War II as a U.S. Army medical sergeant in India.
Upon returning to Milwaukee, Langer began working in his father’s pharmacy with his brother, Herman Langer. He later purchased and ran a pharmacy on the South Side, Jack Langer Pharmacy and Gifts. In 1995, he sold it to Osco Drug.
“He was all about family and work and community. He would make sure people got their medicine, even if they didn’t have the financial resources or transportation,” said his son Daniel (Sharon) Langer of Milwaukee in an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
He is survived by his wife Shirley L. Langer; daughter Julie (Barry) Karp of Milwaukee; sons Daniel (Sharon Siegel) Langer and Jeffrey (Patti Goldman) Langer, both of Milwaukee; brother Herman Langer of Milwaukee; and seven grandchildren.
Goodman Bensman Whitefish Bay Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Burial was in Beth Hamedrosh Hagodel cemetery. Rabbis Nachman Levine and Shmaya Shmotkin officiated.
