Sidran covers Dylan in new jazz album

This November, Madison Jazz icon Ben Sidran released “Dylan Different,” an album in which he reinterprets such fondly remembered Bob Dylan songs as “Tangled Up in Blue” and “Subterranean Homesick Blues” with a Jazz twist.

His son, New York based musician Leo Sidran, performs on the album.

Sidran tackled the project after a long time dabbling in Dylan’s music, first as an artist-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and then later for his album “Cien Noches.”

Sidran grew up in Racine and attended UW-Madison. While earning a Ph.D. in American Studies in England, Sidran wrote the lyrics to “Space Cowboy,” an act that would earn him rock and roll immortality. He went on to play and write for such rock and roll luminaries as Van Morrison, Dianna Ross, and the Steve Miller Band as well as record jazz albums.

Currently, Sidran lives with his wife in Madison and operates the independent record label, Nardis Music, on which “Dylan Different” was released.
