The Jewish Film Festival will screen six films that have not been shown yet in Milwaukee. Sponsored by the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, the festival will include films from the United States, Israel, Chile, Belgium and Mexico. All films have English subtitles.
All films begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Marcus North Shore Cinemas. The films are:
• Oct. 18: “The Little Traitor,” an Israeli film that is based on the Amos Oz novel, “Panther in the Basement.” A story of the friendship between an 11 year old boy and a British officer (played by Alfred Molina) in 1947 Jerusalem. The film is presented in cooperation with the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Israel Center.
• Oct. 19: “El Brindis” — “The Toast,” a Chilean/Mexican tale of three people searching for meaning, love and the importance of holding on to what you have.
• Oct. 20: Two short films, “Pauwels Circus” (“Sous Le Chapiteau Des Pauwels”), a 51-minute Belgian film about a family of circus entertainers, and “The Beetle” (“Ha’Chipusheet”), a 70-minute documentary about an Israeli man’s quest to save his 40-year old VW Beetle after his pregnant wife presses him to scrap the car. Nominated for an Israeli Oscar Award for best documentary, the film won awards in Poland and Canada. It is presented in cooperation with the Israel Center.
• Oct. 21: “A Matter of Size,” an Israeli film about a 340-pound chef who fails at weight loss until he discovers the one place where fat guys can be rock stars: the world of sumo wrestling. It is presented in cooperation with the Israel Center.
• Oct. 22: “Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg,” a documentary about the life of Gertrude Berg, the creator, writer and star of the popular 1930s radio show, “The Goldbergs.” (Read a review of the film in the August Chronicle.)
Tickets are $9/$7 for students and seniors. A five-movie (one film per evening) pass is $40/$30 for students and seniors. Tickets are available only through the JCC.
