Letter: Thank Chronicle staff for their service

As The Chronicle downsizes, I’d like to recognize and thank the staff for their years of dedication to this paper. As a former employee, I can assure readers that we are losing the services of four wonderful and talented people.

I would especially like to recognize the work of op-ed editor Leon Cohen, who has been an institution there for more than 25 years.

A local treasure, Leon is an excellent, award-winning writer whose intelligence and insatiable thirst for knowledge have made him a walking encyclopedia on topics such as Judaica, U.S. and Israeli history, local, national and international politics, religion, music, art and much more.

Chronicle readers have benefitted from Leon’s talent for incorporating helpful facts and appropriate historical perspective in both his news articles and op-eds. He always strives to maintain the highest possible standard of journalistic integrity and demands the same of his co-workers.

Hopefully there will be more robust days for this paper in the future, and certainly some Chronicle is better than no Chronicle.

I encourage everyone, whether you agreed with The Chronicle’s decisions and policies or not, to write in or personally thank Leon, assistant editor Andrea Waxman, and sales representatives Diana Turner and Alix Kaplan for their work and service to our community.

Please do not hesitate to acknowledge The Chronicle’s wonderful production manager, Yvonne Chapman, who is going from full time to part time.

For 19 years she has performed thankless and indispensable work with grace, humility and patience. Without her, there simply would be no Chronicle. I wish her and editor Elana Kahn-Oren the best of luck with the new format.
