Milwaukee native Jerome Sher of Whitefish Bay died March 2. He was 95.
Sher attended Washington High School. His family described him as “a self-made man,” and “owner of his own business from age 19 years.” He owned and operated Thrifty Smoke & Liquor Shop in West Allis. During his working years he was known as “the mayor of West Allis,” according to his family.
Called “Jerry,” he was “a great provider and devoted to his ‘child bride’ and children,” his family wrote to The Chronicle. Giving to others gave him great pleasure and he had many friends from all walks of life, they said. Besides his family, he was especially interested in golf, photography, travel, gardening and history.
He was a member of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue, Zionist Organization of America and B’nai B’rith International.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Helen J. Sher (nee Rabinovitz); daughter Robin (James) Kasch and son Armin Sher, both of Glendale; and three grandchildren.
Blane Goodman Funeral Service handled the arrangements. Rabbi Yitzchak Berman officiated at graveside services on March 8. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
The family appreciates memorial contributions to the Jewish National Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice.
