Our country faces the most serious economic crisis since the Great Depression. Just how deep we go and how long the recession lasts depends upon how quickly we take steps to counter it.
Employment loss in 2008 was 2.6 million jobs, the most since 1945 when 2.8 million jobs were lost. I believe that we need to implement a meaningful and targeted jobs and economic recovery plan.
To be effective this plan must include:
• Broad investments in alternative energy technology to create millions of new jobs, generate billions in public revenue, tackle the issue of climate change and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
• Provide grants to state and local governments so that they will not be forced to raise taxes, lay off workers and cut services in the middle of a downturn.
• Provide targeted investments in public infrastructure that will improve the public safety, provide a crucial shot in the arm for the economy and create hundreds of thousands of good paying jobs to strengthen our middle class.
Please speak about this with your family, friends and contact your federal legislators. Let them know how crucial the need is for this recovery plan and ask for their help to get it enacted and passed.
