‘Cooler heads’ cannot move Hamas hotheads

In his opinion article in the Jan. 9 Chronicle, Rabbi Shlomo Levin exhibits what I believe to be total lack of understanding of what is occurring in Gaza.

Hamas has one central objective: The destruction of Israel. It promotes homicide bombers and indiscriminate rocket attacks on all Israeli civilians. Hamas has no interest in a Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in peace.

Israel, Egypt and other Arab countries warned Hamas to maintain the “ceasefire.” Rockets continued even during the truce period. They increased after Hamas declared the truce at an end. The leaders of Hamas fully knew that the consequences of there actions would incur a severe response.

War is brutal, vicious and painful. Way too many innocents die and are injured. However, every responsible government, including Israel, has a duty to protect its citizens.

After many years and thousands of rockets, what action by “cooler heads” does Levin recommend? Should we vacate Askelon, Sderot or Beersheva?

Perhaps he should move to the Negev. He may then learn that you cannot reason with those whose sole objective is to kill you. Six million innocent Jews learned that during the Shoah. We must not allow that to occur again.
