Native Milwaukeean Nancy Ruth Hindin, of Whitefish Bay died Nov. 19. She was 70.
A 1956 graduate of Shorewood High School and a 1960 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Hindin earned a Master of Education degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She worked as a teacher at Lake Bluff Elementary School in Shorewood.
After retiring she worked for Milwaukee Area Technical College, the Spanish Center, the Lao Family Community, Inc., and other agencies teaching people basic skills.
She had been active in the civil rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s and marched with Milwaukee activist Father James Groppi. She especially enjoyed gardening, bicycling, theater, social action and her grandchildren, her family said.
Hindin is survived by husband William S. Wiener; daughter Elizabeth (Gary) Kerns of Milwaukee; son David Hecht of Bakersfield, Calif.; step-daughters Wendy (Mark) Sommer of San Mateo, Calif., and Allison Klippel of Milwaukee; sisters Jane Stark of Los Angeles and Ruth (Winston) Treadwell of Salem, Ore.; and four grandchildren.
Blane Goodman Funeral Service handled funeral and burial arrangements. Rabbi David Cohen officiated at funeral services at Congregation Sinai on Nov. 21. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Memorials to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or American Players Theatre are appreciated by the family.
