The Chronicle’s Nov. 28 issuecarried an article about the recent visit of Orli Gil, Israeli General Counsel for the Midwest, to Milwaukee.
The article, however, failed to mention the harsh criticism she made in her speech to the Milwaukee Jewish Council for Community Relations of the West Bank settlers’ behavior and the crucial need for a two-state solution in which Israel no longer governs the Palestinian territories.
This is particularly pertinent because in recent days, settlers in Hebron and throughout the West Bank have been clashing with Israeli troops and with Palestinians, in a premeditated attempt to deter Israeli authorities from enforcing the law.
Settlers have attacked and injured Israeli soldiers and police officers and damaged IDF property. They have also attacked and injured Palestinians, desecrated the Muslim cemetery in Hebron, sprayed offensive graffiti on the walls of West Bank mosques, and damaged Palestinian property and olive trees.
Senior Israeli military commanders are warning that the settlers’ violence might provoke Palestinian retaliation. The settlers have also targeted Israeli peace activists for death.
The West Bank settlers’ violence jeopardizes Israel’s national security and the rule of law fundamental to civilized society. All U.S. Pro-Israel organizations, therefore, should openly denounce the settlers’ barbaric actions and call on our government to urge Israel to stop these provocations and dismantle the illegal settlements.
