Jack Silverman

Former Bayside resident Jack Silverman died in Los Angeles on Aug. 13. He was 89.

Born in Jersey City, N.J., he served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. He graduated from New York University and, in 1947, he moved to Milwaukee to marry Grace Saxe.

Silverman worked as a packaging industry executive in partnership with his wife.

The Silvermans enjoyed going to the racetrack in Chicago with their Milwaukee friends and they owned several racehorses over the years, including a part interest in the 1992 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Championship horse, “Gilded Time.”

After his wife’s death in 2001, Silverman moved to San Diego and then, in 2006, to Los Angeles.

In addition to his wife, Silverman was preceded in death by sister Sydell Schaefer and brothers William and Alexander Silverman.

He is survived by sons Barry Wine of New York City and Mark (Mia) Silverman of Santa Monica, Calif.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Goodman-Bensman Whitefish Bay Funeral Home. Cantor David Barash officiated at graveside services in Spring Hill Cemetery on Aug. 21.

The family appreciates memorials to the charity of the donor’s choice.
