Nathan L. Berkowitz of Whitefish Bay died on Aug. 7. He was 90.
Born and raised in Terre Haute, Ind., Berkowitz graduated from the University of Chicago and worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II.
Following the war, Berkowitz settled in Milwaukee and worked in management at Master Lock Company LLC for many years before founding the Lock Corporation of America, Inc.
Berkowitz was a founder and served as president of the Wisconsin Society for Jewish Learning and was a member of the board of governors of Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel.
He was also an active member of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun and the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
An avid golfer, Berkowitz was a supporter of the Evans Scholarship, which enables more than 820 golf caddies to attend college each year, according to its Web site.
Berkowitz was preceded in death by daughter Phyllis Stahl-Berkowitz. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Pearl Berkowitz (nee Stahl); daughters Susan (Cary) Silverstein of Milwaukee and Joan Eisenberg of Santa Monica, Calif.; sister Jean Kagan of Bradenton, Fla.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Blane Goodman Funeral Service, LLC. Rabbi Marc Berkson and Cantor David Barash officiated services at Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun on Aug. 10. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
