Max Gross is a schlub and he’s got a range of troubles. His girlfriend dumped him. His apartment is infested with bed bugs. The IRS is auditing him.
He’s chubby, awkward, barely employed and far less cool than his sophisticated (and worried) parents.
But, as evidenced in his new book, “From Schlub to Stud: How to Embrace Your Inner Mensch and Conquer the Big City” (Skyhorse Publishing, paperback. $12.95), Max is a tiny bit heroic too.
Now a staff writer for the New York Post, Gross also a good writer and a sweet-hearted guy whose sincerity shines in this memoir of his journey to self-empowerment.
Sounds cheesy but somehow it’s not. Sounds like it’ll be drunk with gas-and-girls humor and parts are indeed funny, but this 224-page book manages to get readers rooting for Max.
