Sidney S. Meyers, M.D., of Mequon died Nov. 20. He was 91.
Born in Duluth, Minn., he graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1943. He served in World War II as a battalion surgeon with the rank of major in the Second Armored Division, 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, and in Europe from Normandy to the Elbe River. He was awarded the Combat Medical Badge, the Bronze Star, four battle stars and the Belgian Fourragere.
After the war, Meyers returned to the University of Illinois and finished his education in surgical pathology, gynecology and obstetrics. He practiced medicine in the greater Detroit area for 35 years, serving as the chief of OB/GYN at Macomb Hospital Medical Center and Holy Cross Hospital.
He was a member of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Life Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In 1993, he received the 50th Year Award from the Michigan State Medical Society for his contributions to medicine.
In 1995, Meyers and his wife Gloria (nee Gross) retired to Mequon from Gross Pointe, Mich., to be near their family. He was a member of Congregation Emanu-El of Waukesha.
In addition to his wife, he is further survived by daughters Beth (Dr. Fred) Meyer of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Lisa (Jeffrey) Jones of Deerfield, Ill.; son Alan (Ann) Meyers of Pewaukee; and three grandchildren.
Rabbi Steven Adams officiated at funeral services at Goodman-Bensman Funeral Home on Nov. 21. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
