Shirley Leshin (nee Rubenstein) died of lung cancer on May 14. She was 86.
A native of Thomas, W. Va., Leshin moved to Milwaukee in 1945, after earning a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University and a master’s degree in speech therapy from the University of Michigan.
Leshin worked as a speech therapist in public schools and with stroke patients. She was a member of Congregation Beth Israel, Hadassah-Milwaukee Chapter and Jewish Family Services, Inc., among others.
An active volunteer, Leshin helped many immigrants from the former Soviet Union resettle in Milwaukee. She also enjoyed antiques and entertaining guests.
“She was known for her parties,” said her daughter, Liz Safirstein Leshin of Los Angeles. “Shirley lived in Milwaukee for 63 years and was very active in both the Jewish and general communities.”
Leshin was preceded in death by her husband Sol “Jack” Leshin in 1998 and is survived by sons Laurence Leshin of Albuquerque, N.M., and Randall (Julie) Leshin of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Goodman-Bensman Whitefish Bay Funeral Home. Services were officiated by Rabbi Jacob Herber at the funeral home on May 18. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.
