More anti-Semitic graffiti has been drawn on buildings in Madison, according to a report from Steven Morrison, executive director of the Madison Jewish Community Council.
On May 11, a Stoughton family learned in the morning that the word “Jew” was spray painted in large letters on the garage door of its home. Two other nearby homes were marked, but without words.
No arrests have been made, as of 4 p.m. on May 13. The family has requested that it not be identified, Morrison wrote. Madison police and the MJCCR are involved in investigating, Morrison wrote.
At around 6 p.m. on May 12, three swastikas were spray painted on Hamilton Middle School on Madison’s west side. The letters “TARD” were painted over two incorrectly drawn swastikas; the third was drawn correctly, Morrison reported.
There were also two spray-painted sentences directed at two Hamilton teachers. The sentences, Morrison reported, “were not anti-Semitic, though they could be considered homophobic.”
Morrison reported that two Hamilton students were identified as the perpetrators, and were arrested and suspended from school. He also reported that they committed the vandalism in response to news media reports about other swastikas in the area, like those drawn on the Beth Israel Center. (See May 9 Chronicle.)
“We knew we were taking a risk of copycat incidents when the decision was made to go public with the second Beth Israel incident,” Morrison wrote. “I do not, however, regret that decision. The public and the Jewish community need to know what is happening.”
