Hillel moves cornerstone, marks beginning of new construction

As a University of Wisconsin-Madison student, member of the UW-Madison Hillel board of directors, and chair of our largest student group, the Jewish Cultural Collective, it is an honor to give you an update on Hillel’s capital campaign.

As many of you know, Hillel launched an aggressive fundraising campaign to replace the old, inefficient building with a state-of-the-art, 21st century symbol of pride that will unite and serve the needs of Wisconsin’s Jewish community.

We are currently at 100 percent design development, and by the time you read this, we will have removed the cornerstone from our old building.

There is a lot of buzz on campus about this. Many Jewish students, some active in Hillel, others not, are talking with great excitement about the new building, which is going to feature ample meeting space for student groups, plenty of space for Shabbat and High Holiday services, a kosher food café/bar, an exercise room, and more.

Furthermore, in line with Hillel’s commitment to tikkun olam (repair of the world), the Barbra Hochberg Center for Jewish Student Life will be a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building.

By using recycled construction materials, efficient heating and cooling systems, and reducing the building’s ecological footprint, Hillel will serve as an example of sustainable living in Wisconsin and among the Jewish community for many years to come.

Be sure to check out www.uwhillel.org/capitalupdate for the latest news and information on the new Hillel building here in Madison. We would greatly appreciate your involvement and support in this effort.

The students here in Madison are yearning for a building that can meet their needs, and we need your support to meet our goal of having the new building opened and occupied by January 2009. Thank you.
