Women’s Division slates ‘Political Awareness Series’

The Women’s Division of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation will begin its 2007-2008 Edie Adelman Political Awareness Series on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

The series offers programs designed to educate women about political and legislative issues, while encouraging advocacy and action.

Sessions will be held at the Daniel M. Soref Community Hall at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 9:15-11 a.m. Series cost is $55, and a commitment to the Milwaukee Jewish Federation 2008 Annual Campaign is required.

Scheduled speakers and topics are:

• Tuesday, Oct. 9 — Sandy Pasch, R.N., M.S., M.A., “The Ethics of Mental Health.” A nurse for more than 30 years, Pasch teaches mental health and ethics at Columbia College of Nursing. She is president emeritus of the Milwaukee chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

• Tuesday, Nov. 13 — Professor Jeremy Suri, “Henry Kissinger and the American Century.” Associate professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Suri is author of “Henry Kissinger and the American Century,” which was published this year.

• Wednesday, Dec. 12 — Mike Gousha, “How the Media Shape Policy.” Gousha serves as Distinguished Fellow in Public Policy at Marquette University Law School. He formerly was a television anchor and reporter for 25 years.

• Tuesday, Jan. 8 — Jim Henderson, “Women-Powered Politics and Political Activism: Leaders for the 21st Century.” Assistant professor of business and management at Alverno College, Henderson was an invited member of the advisory council to Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton’s nonpartisan initiative, Wisconsin Women Equal Prosperity.

• Wednesday, Feb. 13 — Professor Thomas M. Holbrook, “Voting Behavior and Elections.” Holbrook is Wilder Crane Professor of Government at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He specializes in U.S. political campaigns and elections, and has published widely.

• Tuesday, March 11 — Julia Taylor, “Regional Cooperation: Public and Private Politics Working Together.” President of the Greater Milwaukee Committee since 2002, Taylor was previously executive director of the YWCA of Greater Milwaukee.

• Wednesday, April 9 — “Unique Day in Jewish Chicago,” including the new Spertus Museum.

• Wednesday, May 14 — Lisa M. Maatz, “How Washington Really Works.” Maatz is director of Public Policy and Government Relations for the American Association of University Women and interim director of the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund.
