To recognize an accomplishment that school president Jim Hiller called “amazing,” Torah Academy of Milwaukee will celebrate its bat mitzvah at a dinner on Sunday, May 18, 6 p.m., at the Zoofari Conference Center at the Milwaukee County Zoo, 9715 W. Bluemound Rd.
At the celebration, Dr. Bernard and Robin Cohen will be honored as the driving force in establishing the school.
“They started the school with four other families and have watched it grow from five to 25 girls,” said Trudy Farber, TAM’s administrator.
The Cohens were committed to offering Jewish girls a high school opportunity in Milwaukee. In the beginning, they ran the school office out of their home. And Bernie served as school president for 10 years.
Hiller said, “We are honoring Bernie and Robin Cohen for their tireless effort to create and sustain TAM over its 12 years of existence. They have been at the forefront of every aspect of TAM’s growth from its first day. They most assuredly deserve the recognition.”
The school offers a full academic program of secular and Judaic classes for its college-bound students and some college-level courses through Mt. Mary College.
“The school, at this celebration,” Hiller added, “pauses to share with the entire Milwaukee community the successes of our young women enabled by our secular and religious staff, headed by Sora Rauch, principal, and R. Kevin Waldeck, director of secular studies.”
Further, Hiller told The Chronicle in a telephone interview that the school’s biggest accomplishment is its survival. “Our sustainability is really amazing. We have a small, but stable and healthy student population that continues to grow slowly, but steadily. That many Orthodox families choose to have their daughters remain in Milwaukee is a real testament to the school.
“And, we may be small in size, but not in stature. We successfully compete with much larger schools nationwide for spots at top college seminaries in the United States and Israel. Most often, our girls get their first choice for post-secondary study.”
