Former Milwaukeean Sonyamae Alpert, nee Malmon, died of complications following open-heart surgery in Sheboygan on June 24, 2004. She was 74.
A 1948 graduate of Milwaukee’s Washington High School, she and her late husband, Arthur L. Alpert, operated Alpert’s Food Market in Sheboygan until 1981. He preceded her in death in 1988.
She was a member of Sheboygan’s Congregation Beth El.
Her son, Dick (Debbie) Alpert of Glendale, said, “She was a pro mahjongg player from the time she could say ‘bam,’ playing many times weekly and teaching the game in Sheboygan at the synagogue.”
In addition to her son, she is survived by daughter Susie (Rabbi Paul) Drazen of St. Paul, Minn., and five grandchildren.
Her son-in-law officiated at funeral services June 27, 2004. Burial was in Sheboygan Hebrew Cemetery.
