Renowned hydrologist Sol Resnick of Tucson, Ariz., died of lymphoma Dec. 11. He was 87.
Born in Milwaukee, he graduated from North Division High School in 1936. He earned bachelors and masters degrees in civil and agricultural engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and received an honorary doctorate of science in 1993 from the University of Arizona, where he worked as a hydrologist and researcher.
He also served as a professor emeritus in hydrology and was the director emeritus of the UA Water Resources Research Center. Though he retired in 1984, he held a campus office until two years ago, according to his wife.
He received the Hydrology Lifetime Achievement Award from the university, and had a room there named in his honor.
During World War II, he served as a counterintelligence officer in Italy. From 1952-1957, he was an adviser in the U.S. Agency for International Development, working as an irrigations specialist in India. He also worked in Israel every summer for 20 years.
He served as president of the Tucson chapter of the Zionist Organization of America, was involved with B’nai B’rith, and also served on the board of the local Hillel Foundation and on the Negev Committee.
He is survived by wife Elaine Minow Resnick of Tucson; brothers Abraham Resnick of Milwaukee and Victor Resnick of Tucson; stepchildren Carol Greene of Washington, D.C., and Charles Greene of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
Rabbi Gideon Goldenholz officiated at funeral services Dec. 14. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
