Lifelong Milwaukeean Sara Zarem died at the Jewish Home and Care Center of complications of a stroke on Nov. 27. She was 89.
She graduated from North Division High School.
A homemaker, she belonged to Congregation Beth Israel and was a member of Hadassah, the National Council of Jewish Women-Milwaukee Section and Women’s American ORT.
According to her family, “She epitomized motherhood. In every spare moment, she was thinking of others. She spent hours baking cookies, cooking casseroles and soups, crocheting blankets and scarves, and handing out two-dollar bills, underwear and socks to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“She left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She gave to others until her last moment. And that is her legacy.”
She is survived by sons Dr. Norton (Lilyan) Zarem of Fox Point and Marshall (Ardis) Zarem of Whitefish Bay; daughter Lynn (Allen) Dennenberg of Mission Hills, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Zarem in 1979.
Rabbis Paul Kerbel, Shlomo Pontos and Ronald Shapiro officiated at the funeral on Dec. 1. Burial was in Second Home Cemetery.
The family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Jewish Home and Care Center, Hadassah, NCJW or ORT.
