Sara Franklin Bornstein

Native Milwaukeean Sara Franklin Bornstein died April 5 at the age of 96 of complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1928 and worked as a microbiologist at Mt. Sinai Hospital until 1935 when her first son was born. She was sent to Chicago to help fight the typhoid epidemic of the 1930s, according to her son Myron Bornstein of Highland Park, Ill.

“She devoted herself to motherhood and homemaking with the same energy and skill she gave to her medical professional work,” he said.

Sara and Sam funded their grandchildren’s college tuitions and then turned to the Jewish community, supporting the concept of the Jewish Home and Care Center and establishing continuing education seminars for philanthropic giving, he added.

In addition to her husband and son, she is survived by daughter Judy Alter of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; sister Ida Ozonoff of Milwaukee; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Samuel L. & Sara Bornstein Alzheimer Disease Endowment Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation, 1400 N. Prospect Ave. #1000, Milwaukee, WI 53202.
