Ruth Gordon (nee Shapiro) of Shorewood died on Oct. 26 of natural causes. She was 102.
Gordon was born in Milchin, Russia, and came to Milwaukee as a child. She graduated from North Division High School in 1922.
A homemaker, she was active in Milwaukee’s Jewish community, serving as president of Jewish Family and Children’s Service Auxiliary, Hadassah, the Hakodimo Club and Jewish Orphan Home. She was also a member of Women’s American ORT, the National Council of Jewish Women and Zionist Organization of America, and she was involved with the Jewish Home for the Aged.
She was a member of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue, where she held many offices, and Temple Menorah.
According to her family, Gordon was an excellent bridge player who played into her late 90s. She enjoyed reading and being with friends, but her family was “always number one,” they said, adding that she will be remembered for “her kindness and generosity in helping others.”
Her husband Morris Gordon died in 1977. Survivors include daughters, Doris (Paul) Katz and Joyce (Irving) Kahn, both of Bayside; sister Rose Forman, of Miami Beach; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Oct. 29 at Temple Menorah. Rabbis Isaac and Gil-Ezer Lerer officiated. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.
