Sheboygan native Ruth Eizen, née Kuinn, died Oct. 28 after a five-year struggle with cancer. She was 84.
A graduate of Central High School, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she was met her future husband, Harry Eizen. They married during World War II and spent five years in the Air Force. “Ruth worked at every Air Force base, enabling them to save money to buy a pharmacy after the war ended,” her family said.
After her husband died, she married Maurice Markey, who also preceded her in death.
Following her second marriage she earned a master’s degree in social work, graduating cum laude, and then studied at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where she received certification as a psychotherapist.
She served as president of the parent-teacher association at her daughters’ school, Women’s American ORT, and AZO Auxiliary; vice president and trustee of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue’s Sisterhood; state coordinator of AARP’s Citizen Representation Program and board member of Mayor Maier’s Beautification Committee, among others.
“She and her husband, Harry, dabbled in politics and were delighted to have attended President [John F.] Kennedy’s inauguration and [inaugural] ball,” said her family.
She is survived by daughters Cheryl Johnson of Milwaukee and Bonnie Jane Adelman of Warrenville, Ill.; sisters Lorraine Gaines of Glendale, Jen (Manie) Katz of Milwaukee and Sylvia (Herman) Kaplan of Albemarle, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
Rabbi Gideon Goldenholz officiated at funeral services at Beth El Ner Tamid on Nov 1. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
The family would appreciate memorials to the American Cancer Society.
