Philip J. Kinsler

Philip J. Kinsler, of Whitefish Bay and San Diego, Calif., died suddenly Sept. 5 from complications of a brain tumor. He was 83.

A native of Chicago, he received a bachelor of science degree in 1941 and an MBA in 1950 from the University of Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II at Aberdeen proving grounds in ordinance testing.

He and his first wife, the late Irene Kinsler, settled in 1951 in Madison, where he worked as a statistician at Oscar Mayer and later as a computer programmer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison until his retirement in 1983.

He belonged to Temple Beth El since 1951 and was a former board member.

According to his family, “He was proud of achieving the rank of Eagle Scout [in the Boy Scouts of America] and of his culinary skills. Also, he enjoyed traveling.”

He is survived by a daughter, Judith (Tod) Florey of San Diego; brother David Kinsler of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; two grandchildren; and companion Miriam Davis. He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1983 and by his second wife, Cynthia Kinsler, in 1993.

A memorial service was held Sept. 9 at Temple Beth El in Madison, to which the family suggested contributions.
