Norman W. Mautner

Milwaukee native Norman W. Mautner died Nov. 15 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 85.

He graduated from Washington High School in 1936 and Marquette University in 1940. After graduation, he worked in the advertising department at Boston Store. Later, with two partners, he founded his own ad agency, which was known as Mark, Mautner & Berman; The Mautner Agency; Franklin/Mautner; and Andrews/Mautner. It has since been renamed Blue Horse Inc. He retired in 1986.

He served in World War II in the Coast Guard and U.S. Navy. His love of sailing grew into a lifelong passion for fishing and led him and a group of friends to found The Great Lakes Sport Fishermen.

He also was active in the Boy Scouts throughout his life. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout at the old Troop 145 at Temple Beth El. He served as a Scout Master and was awarded the Silver Beaver, its highest honor for adult contributions in volunteer leadership.

For many years, he served on the board of Matarah, a program at the Milwaukee Center for Independence designed to give disabled people job skills to enable them to join the workforce.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Mautner (nee Goldberg) of Glendale; son Michael Mautner of Milwaukee; daughter Julie Mautner of St. Remy de Provence, France; brother Larry Mautner; and sister Annette (David) Miller. He was preceded in death by son William Mautner in 1994.

Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at funeral services on Nov. 18. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.

Donations to the William S. Mautner Memorial Fund at Jewish Family Services to benefit the mentally ill were suggested by the family.
