Longtime Milwaukee resident Minna Sable (nee Gibbs) of Shorewood, died July 20. She was 83.
A native of Boston, she studied at Massachusetts College of Art. Accompanying her husband, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee professor Dr. Martin Sable, as he pursued his academic career, she also studied at the National University of Mexico, the University of California-Los Angeles and in Jerusalem. She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from UWM in 1972.
An artist and weaver, she exhibited oil and watercolor paintings and wall hangings and taught arts and crafts at Milwaukee County senior centers. She also judged art works at the Lakefront Festival of the Arts and the Charles Allis Museum and volunteered at the Milwaukee Art Museum and the William F. Eisner Museum of Advertising & Design.
She was a member of Social Science Club, American Association of University Women, Wisconsin Hand-Weavers Association and Hadassah. She also taught English to Russian-Jewish women at Golda Meir House as a volunteer.
According to her husband, she enjoyed reading and read a book each day. She was “known [by her students and friends] for her kindness, caring and empathy,” he said.
In addition to her husband of 55 years, she is survived by sons James (Linda) Sable of Seattle and Charles Sable of Milwaukee.
Burial was in Haverhill, Mass., on July 21. Rabbis Shlomo Levin and Raphael Wachsman officiated at a memorial service in Milwaukee on July 28.
