Former Milwaukee resident Marian Miller (nee Aranoff) of Green Bay died of cancer on Sept. 9. She was 72 years old.
Born in Chicago, Miller came to Milwaukee at 14 to live with her aunt after both parents had died. She graduated from Washington High School in 1953 and received a degree in lower elementary education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Before moving to Green Bay with her family, she taught at Hopkins and 21st Street Schools, then substitute taught in the Green Bay school system.
Miller was a member of Congregation Cnesses Israel, where she taught Sunday school, served as Sisterhood president and was the historian and archivist. She was also a member of the Literacy Council, teaching English as a second language to Russian families; B.A.G.S., the genealogical society of Green Bay; Jewish Women International; B’nai B’rith Women; and Hadassah.
According to her family, she was interested in Jewish history and the Green Bay Jewish community. In her younger days, she acted in Yiddish theater, they said. She also believed strongly in the importance of education.
She is survived by her husband, Donald; sons Morris of Chicago and Joseph (Ronit) of Lakewood, N.J.; daughters Esther (Neil) Lindenbaum of Alexandria, Va., and Gayle (Abie Berger) Miller of Jerusalem; a sister, Anna Aranoff, of Chicago; and 17 grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on Sept. 10 in the Jewish cemetery located within Fort Howard Cemetery in Green Bay. Rabbi Melech Lensky officiated.
