Magda Neumann

Milwaukeean and Holocaust survivor Magda Neumann, nee Perl, died Nov. 6. She was 85.

According to her daughter, Aggie Neumann of Milwaukee, Magda was born in Czechoslovakia and educated there. Soon after her marriage to Miklos Neumann, the Nazis took them to different camps.

They reunited after the war, escaped from Budapest during the Hungarian revolt against the Soviet Union in 1956 and came to Milwaukee with about $7 in their pockets in 1957, said Aggie.

According to Aggie, Magda and Miklos “worked hard” in Milwaukee.
Miklos operated a wrecking yard “for a short time” and died about 25 years ago, Aggie said.

Magda at different times belonged to Temple Menorah and Congregation Beth Israel; and in her last years attended Congregation Agudas Achim Chabad with her daughter.

She also was a member of the New Americans Club. According to Aggie, Magda was a “fabulous” cook who “liked to bake for her grandchildren.”

In addition to Aggie, Magda is survived by daughter Susanna (Naum Medovoy) Neumann of New York City; brothers Karl (Leah) and Alex (Ida) Perl, both of Milwaukee; and three grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Goodman-Bensman Whitefish Bay Funeral Home. Rabbi Dovid Rapoport officiated at the funeral on Nov. 6. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

The family would appreciate memorial contributions to Congregation Agudas Achim Chabad, and “would like to thank everyone for their support during our difficult time.”
