Milwaukee native Louis M. Kaplan died Dec. 11 of heart and kidney failure. He was 97.
A graduate of North Division High School in 1925 where he was a member of the National Honor Society, he graduated from an independent pharmacy school in Milwaukee and pursued a career as a pharmacist for more than 50 years.
He was president of the Milwaukee chapter of Alpha Zeta Omega Pharmaceutical Fraternity for more than five years. In addition, he was a program chair, earned the chapter’s “Man of the Year” award and the National AZO Meritorious Award as the oldest active member.
He was also a member of Congregation Beth Israel, Jewish National Fund, Alzheimer’s Association, Milwaukee Veteran Pharmacist Association, and a member of the board of KOACH. He was a 42nd degree Mason at Milwaukee Harmony Lodge.
He was a dedicated caregiver to his wife during her struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, according to his family.
He particularly enjoyed participating in AZO conventions and seminars, travel, Jewish culture, learning activities, and 1940s music.
Preceded in death by wife Sophie (nee Klieger) Kaplan in 1994, he is survived by daughters Phyllis Lensky of Glendale and Edith Kaplan of San Francisco; sister Betty Colbert of Milwaukee; two grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Rabbi Jacob Herber officiated at services on Dec. 13. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.
