Community volunteer Lois “Cookie’ Goldberg (nee Sax) of Glendale died July 31 of cancer.
She was born in Milwaukee and graduated from Washington High School. An accomplished singer and dancer, she received a scholarship to attend the Julliard School of Music in New York.
She worked in the North Shore public school system for many years and was known to her neighbors as the person who started the first Glendale Fourth of July.
“She felt it was important for the residents of Glendale to have their own holiday celebration,” said her husband, Izzy Goldberg. He added that she loved to entertain and frequently invited those who were alone to their home for holidays, especially Passover.
“She volunteered for many organizations to help the less fortunate. She loved giving of herself and hoped to give them a positive outlook on life,” he said. “Also, she loved spending time with her family and always made sure that they knew they were most important to her.”
In addition to her husband, she is survived by son Marty Goldberg of Milwaukee; sister Sharon (Michael) Arbiture of Vernon Hills, Ill.; father-in-law David Goldberg of Milwaukee; and sisters-in-law Estelle (Paul) Mendelson of Boca Raton, Fla., and Rose (Brian) Goldberg-Gale of Denver.
Rabbi Michel Twerski officiated at the funeral. Burial was in Second Home Cemetery.
Memorials to the American Cancer Society were suggested by the family.
