Joy Doppelt

Longtime fashion leader Joy Doppelt (nee Metz) of Fox Point died July 13 of cancer. She was 77.

She was born in Milwaukee and graduated in 1942 from Riverside High School and in 1946 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

For more than 50 years, she worked for Hixon’s, a women’s apparel store founded by her parents, Harry and Berdae Metz; she eventually became the principal salesperson and part owner. She was recognized for her sense of fashion and customer service.

According to her family, “Many Milwaukee women relied on her to put their outfits together.” She retired in 1997.

She belonged to Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun and was involved in numerous charitable and philanthropic organizations. She volunteered for arts and literacy programs for inner-city youths, for adult literacy programs and at food banks. Later, she established a food service program through CEEB to feed the homeless.
She co-founded the Children’s Performing Arts Program, which tutored inner-city youths in arts and language. She also supported women’s rights and personally protected those visiting reproductive rights facilities from protesters.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Sidney Doppelt; son Andrew (Melanie) Doppelt of Northbrook, Ill; daughter Amy Doppelt of San Francisco; sister Gloria Weiss of Milwaukee; brother James (Sharon) Metz of Carlsbad, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Rabbi Francis Barry Silberg officiated at graveside services at Spring Hill Cemetery on July 16.

Memorial contributions to the Columbia Hospital Foundation or the Food Bank Fund at Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun were suggested by the family.
