The Jewish Home and Care Center announced last week that it has raised $10 million toward its $15 million capital campaign goal, after Ruth Coleman, honorary campaign chair, made a lead gift.
“We are delighted that a lead gift from our dear friend and supporter, Ruth Coleman, has made this milestone possible,” said Daniel Chudnow, chairman of the JHCC capital campaign, in a release.
Other lead gifts have been made by the Chudnow family and the Posner Foundation.
According to William Komisar, chairman of the board of the JHCC, the campaign is the first of its kind for the home since 1971.
“As we celebrate our 100th year of service to our community, this project is extremely important, as we plan for the next 100 years of fulfilling our mission to serve the elderly,” he said.
Construction on the Prospect Avenue campus is expected to begin in spring.
Residents of the JHCC moved to a temporary location in Mequon in November 2005, where they will remain until the renovations are complete.
During the construction, according to Mina Tepper, president of the JHCC, “many of the home’s essential systems, including heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing, will be replaced. Architectural changes to better meet the needs of the frail elderly both structurally and programmatically will be incorporated into the new designs.”
In addition, Tepper said the home’s synagogue, lobby, Rubenstein Family Kosher Oasis Restaurant and front gardens will get a new look.
“The two years that it will take to renovate our campus will result in decades of state of the art care for Milwaukee’s elderly,” said Nita Corré, president of the JHCC Foundation.
