After a long fight against gall bladder cancer, Jean Ausman (nee Montag) died March 17 at HospiceCare in Madison. She was 74.
She was born in Milwaukee and graduated from Washington High School in 1944 and from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
She attended Steuben Middle School as a child and returned to work there as head secretary for 25 years, retiring from the Milwaukee Public Schools in 1998.
She belonged to Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue and its Sisterhood, was a life member of the City of Hope and a member of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA Auxiliary. She also supported many charities.
She was an avid reader, played bridge and mah jong with her lifelong friends, enjoyed knitting and needlepoint, and loved the dollar slots.
According to her children, her family was the most important focus in her life and she will remain a hero to them.
She is survived by daughters Robbi Babl of Kewaunee, Wis., and Diane (Don) Ashworth of Eldorado Hills, Calif.; son Rick (Vicki) Ausman of Madison; sister Ruth Berman of Milwaukee; brothers Burton (Marianne) Montag of Milwaukee, David (Thelma) Montag of Encinitas, Calif., and Robert (Colleen) Montag of Milwaukee; brother-in-law Sheldon (Sandra) Ausman of Los Angeles; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by longtime friend and companion Irvin Kane.
Rabbi Gideon Goldenholz officiated at the funeral on March 21 with burial in Mound Zion Cemetery.
