James Jay Katz

Milwaukee native James Jay Katz of Fox Point died of pancreatic cancer Sept. 6. He was 49.

He was a 1974 graduate of Nicolet High School and in 1978 he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business/real estate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

A real estate property manager, he was president of James J. Katz Property Management Incorporated where he “was known for his fairness, honesty and patience,” his family said.

He was a member of Congregation Sinai. His interests included music, especially The Grateful Dead, travel, poker and sports.

His wife, Mari S. Katz, nee Grossman, said that they were childhood sweethearts, that he adored his three daughters, Sarah, Rebecca and Aimee and that family was the heart of his life.

“Shared among his friends, family and associates was a quick-wittedness and a rare sense of humor that was never at anyone’s expense.

“[His] love of life and generous spirit prevailed during his battle with cancer. He brought graciousness, courage and steadfast resolve to a painful and aggressive disease,” she said.

In addition to his wife and daughters, he is survived by parents Natalie and Matty Katz of Milwaukee; brothers Larry Katz and Mitchell (Karen Dubman) Katz both of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and sister Jody (David) Schmidt of Chicago.

Rabbi David Cohen officiated at funeral services at Congregation Shalom, Sept. 8. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorials to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Inc., 2141 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 7000, El Segundo, Calif., 90245, would be appreciated by the family.
