Funeral services were held in Flushing, N.Y., on April 21 for Ida Schwartz (nee Greenstein). She died in Milwaukee on April 20 of pneumonia at the age of 99.
She was born in Poland and immigrated to New York at the age of 16. She worked as a seamstress in a factory and helped raise her three younger brothers.
She was married to Gedeliah Schwartz for 42 years at the time of his death in 1971. She moved to Milwaukee in 1997 to be near her daughter, Goldie (Rabbi Isaac) Lerer.
She loved embroidery, davening and daily recitation of Psalms. Her daughter added, “She was an excellent homemaker and very devoted and observant Jew. She learned to read and write Hebrew and to daven while living in the shtetl in Poland when the Rebbe came to teach her brothers. On Shabbat and holidays, the other women sat near her in the shul to listen her davening. Also, supporting charitable institutions remained a top priority throughout her life.
“She was known to everyone as ‘Bobee,’ and her grandchildren loved her chocolate chip cookies.”
She is further survived by son Irving Schwartz of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; brother Morris (Helen) Greenstein of Brooklyn, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Rabbi Isaac Lerer officiated at the service.
