Former Milwaukeean Howard M. Bern died Oct. 10 in Delray Beach, Fla. He was 87.
He was born in Chisolm, Minn., and moved to Milwaukee as a young man. He graduated from West Division High School and earned an accounting degree from Marquette University.
Business partner in Bern Boys Furniture, Bern’s interests included family, business, community service and travel.
He was a member of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue and served as synagogue treasurer for 25 years. A member of the shul’s men’s club, he also received its Man of the Year Award. He was also a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge.
His family will remember him “as a kind, generous, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother.”
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and was preceded in death by his former wife, Dorothy, who died in 1972. Other survivors include son Alan (Barbara) Bern of Milwaukee; daughters Roberta (Fred) Goldner of Milwaukee and Janice (David) Manhoff of Chicago; brothers Leslie (Florence) Bern and Jim (Harriet) Bern; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Rabbi Gideon Goldenholz officiated at graveside services at Mound Zion Cemetery on Oct. 14.
