Former Milwaukeean Hilda G. Stern, nee Gennet, died in Princeton, N.J., Jan. 14. She was 84.
A native of Newark, N.J., she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University in 1942. In 1944, she married Milwaukee native James F. Stern, an attorney, and moved with him to Milwaukee. He died in 2004.
Together with her late husband and his brother, Robert Stern, she founded Great Lakes Biochemical Co. in Milwaukee, and served as its director of marketing until her retirement in 1981. She resided in Sarasota, Fla., for the past 18 years.
She was a member of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun for more than 40 years and was a longtime member of its Sisterhood. According to her family, she was a gifted painter who was active in the arts community and was instrumental in starting a program that offered the opportunity for gifted inner-city children to take art classes.
She is survived by son David Stern of Newport, R.I.; daughters Nikki and Deborah Stern, both of Princeton, N.J.; three grandchildren and a great grandchild.
Burial took place in Sarasota on Jan. 15.
