HERC to honor survivors, liberators at 60th anniversary of war’s end

The Holocaust Education and Resource Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Coalition for Jewish Learning will hold a tribute event to honor the lives and contributions of Holocaust survivors and liberators on Wednesday, June 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Themed “Portraits in Courage: Honor the Memory,” the event marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. It will take place at the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Calatrava Wing.

“The survivor community is dwindling every day and this is an opportunity to pay tribute to the survivors and liberators,” said Betty Chrustowski, event co-chair with Bill Appel.

“The 60th anniversary of the end of WWII and the liberation of the camps presents a golden opportunity to showcase their lives and to show appreciation to the local members of the U.S. Armed Forces that participated in the liberation of concentration camps,” according to a HERC release.

Intended to involve the greater Milwaukee community as well as families of survivors from around the country, the event will include various activities for not only survivors and liberators, but also area students.

Anniversary events will include educational activities for adults and students; a ceremony honoring liberators and survivors; the exhibition of artist Leo Neufeld’s 11 paintings of local survivors; a keynote speaker; and a color guard composed of members of units that liberated the camps.

Event co-sponsors are Time Warner Cable and the Jewish Community Foundation, the endowment development program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. For more information, call 414-962-8860.
