Child psychiatrist Dr. Harlan M. Smith of Carlsbad, Calif., died on Nov. 9 of cancer. He was 69.
He was born in Milwaukee. His father was Joseph E. Smith, who was very active in Milwaukee’s Jewish community. Harlan graduated from Shorewood High School and continued his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Northwestern University Medical School. He moved to California in 1977.
He served as the chief of staff at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara. He belonged to the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
He was a member of Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos and was active in its musical activities. He was an avid musician who played piano and accordion, composed music, and was music director and pianist for community theaters in Madison and Los Altos. He also enjoyed photography.
He is survived by wife Eileen (Blumenfeld) Smith; mother Beatrice R. Smith of Milwaukee; daughter Lori (Tom) Bukowski of Minneapolis; sons Scott (Maria) Smith of Chicago and David (Laurel) Smith of Solana Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Graveside services took place in El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego on Nov. 12.
