Gussie Rosen

Longtime Milwaukee resident Gussie Rosen died Nov. 21 at the age of 100. The cause of death was pneumonia.

Born in New York, she came to Wisconsin from Pittsburgh in 1910. She worked in sales at Boston Store in downtown Milwaukee and Gimbels in Capitol Court.

She was a member of Temple Menorah, as well as City of Hope, Hadassah and the Wisconsin Humane Society; and was a contributor to many other organizations.

Her survivors said that family was always her top priority. She also took in foster children and loved knitting, crocheting, mahjong and cooking; her family said she “made the best potato pancakes and barley soup.”

“She was a warm … caring person [who] was there to help anyone, even in the Jewish Home where she lived for ten and a half years,” they added.

She was preceded in death in 1952 by husband Isadore E. Rosen. She is survived by daughter Beverly Bartell of Brown Deer; son Gerald Rosen of Glendale; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Rabbi Gil-Ezer Lerer officiated at graveside services in Spring Hill Cemetery on Nov. 23.

Memorials to the Wisconsin Humane Society, the Jewish Home and Care Center or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
