Gilbert H. Meisel died on June 28 at the age of 88.
Born in Janesville, Meisel graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and served as an officer in the Quartermaster Corps in Europe during World War II.
For many years, he operated a men’s clothing store in Janesville with his late brother, Sanford. After retiring, he moved to Milwaukee.
Meisel channeled his love of music into philanthropy, donating funds and a concert grand piano to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s music department. He also gave generously to many charitable organizations in the Jewish community.
According to his family, Meisel enjoyed ballroom dancing and playing the piano.
He is survived by sister Fanchon Lessing of Laguna Woods, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.
Rabbi Shlomo Pontos officiated at graveside services, held at Spring Hill Cemetery on July 2.
